I’m a little donut obsessed. Ever since last summer, enjoying hot fresh donuts from Duck Donuts changed me from enjoying donuts to LOVING donuts. Last summer I made raised, fried donuts and used that recipe for some filled donuts (S’mores and Maple Bacon). BUT sometimes I want something less heavy, baked instead of fried, BUT not cake donuts either. SO here they are, yeast based BAKED donuts! You can use this recipe for the filled donuts as well!

After baking these you can roll them in cinnamon and sugar or cover them in glaze, just like fried donuts. They are totally versatile and everyone loves them. I think my kids loved them even MORE than they liked the fried version! Personally there is a time and a place for both… I still love fried anything…

The dough is easy peasy. I couldn’t find my donut cutter so I used what I had, which was a fluted round cutter set, hey whatever works, right? BUT I highly suggest getting a good donut cutter.

Don’t forget… the double in size part is more important than the time (and mytip for how to keep track of the dough size).

Can the dough be held over night in the fridge?

    Reply

    • Ashlee Marie

remember freezers stop the rising and refrigerators just slow down the rising. so yes, but don’t let them over rise

I guess you could but just doing a chocolate glaze is the most classic

These were a good sweet bread/roll, but not donut-like. My kids still devoured them, but didn’t quite quench the donut-craving for me. Thanks for posting it though!

I like the fried version better, more donut, baking just isn’t the same but my kids still like them

How long do these stay fresh once they are baked?

      like any donut not long.

I assume if one uses a donut cutter in this recipe they’ll end up with donut holes. Does one bake the donut holes for the same amount of time that they bake the full size donuts? Other recipes for baked donuts say that the donut holes have a shorter bake time than the full size ring donuts.

    • Ashlee Marie

yes, I just add the donut holes to the same baking pan as the donuts.

I haven’t bakes yet but for the dough, I used coconut oil and soy milk as my daughter can’t have dairy. So far the dough looks great smells great, I also added a sprinkle of nutmeg.Thank you for posting I am planning on rolling into a string to use a donut pan.

donut pans are for cake donut batter, you don’t need to use them for yeast donuts, just cut them out! Hope they worked out good, coconut would be amazing in donuts!
