👩🏽‍🍳 PRO TIPS

Don't overwork the dough: When combining the ingredients for the scones, avoid overmixing. This keeps the scones light and fluffy.

Chill your butter: Using chilled butter helps create a tender, flaky texture in your scones. Cut your butter into cubes and keep it in the fridge until you're ready to use it.

Let them cool before icing: Allow your scones to cool completely before applying the icing. This helps the icing to set properly and not melt into the scones.

Make the icing thick: Gradually add milk to your icing sugar until you get a thick consistency. A thicker icing will stay on top of the scones better and won't seep into them.

Blot the pumpkin puree: Scoop the pumpkin puree in a clean paper towel. This will take some moisture so the dough won't be sticky.

📋 VARIATIONS

Make it Nutty: If you love a little crunch in your baked goods, add a half cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the dough.

Add a Citrus Twist: For a fresh and tangy twist, add the zest of one orange to the scone dough. The citrus notes will beautifully balance the warm pumpkin spice and add freshness to each bite.

Make it Creamy: To make your scones extra rich and delicious, replace the milk in the icing with heavy cream. This will give your icing a thicker, creamier texture.

Buttermilk: Use buttermilk instead of milk in this recipe to make the scones lighter.

🍽️ HOW TO SERVE

  • For a cozy autumn breakfast, pair your pumpkin scones with a hot cup of coffee or tea. The warm spices in the scones perfectly complement the rich flavors of your morning brew.
  • Pumpkin scones make a delightful addition to any afternoon tea party. Pair them with a pot of strong black tea or a fragrant chai blend for a comforting, warming treat.
  • For a delicious dessert, serve your pumpkin scones warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The ice cream melting into the warm scone is a treat your taste buds won't forget!
  • If you want something extra, spread a little cream cheese frosting on your pumpkin scone. The tangy frosting and sweet scone are a match made in heaven.

💬 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I use as a substitute for pumpkin pie spice?

If you don't have pumpkin pie spice, you can make your own at home. Check out my pumpkin pie spice recipe to learn how!

Is it necessary to chill the butter before adding it to the flour?

Yes, using chilled butter is crucial in this recipe. It helps create a flaky texture in the scones. If the butter is too warm, it can make the scones dense and heavy.

Can I use canned pumpkin puree for this recipe?

Absolutely! Canned pumpkin puree works wonderfully in this recipe. Just make sure it is pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling, which has added sugars and spices.

Can I make the scones without the icing?

Yes, the icing is optional. The scones are delicious on their own, but the icing adds an extra layer of sweetness. If you're watching your sugar intake, you might prefer them without the icing.

🌡️ STORING

Refrigerate: After enjoying your pumpkin scones, you might have a few left. No worries! They can be safely stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Just ensure they're in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

Freezing: Unfortunately, the texture of the scones changes when frozen and thawed, making them less appetizing. So, it is best to enjoy them fresh or refrigerated.

Reheat Instructions: Want to enjoy your refrigerated scones warm? You can easily reheat them in your oven or microwave. For the oven, preheat it to low heat and warm your scones for about ten minutes.

FAQs

Why do you rest scones before baking? ›

The explanation is simple: As with other doughs, including pizza dough, resting lets scone dough's gluten relax completely, so that it doesn't snap back during shaping or baking.

What happens if you put too much sugar in scones? ›

We are all a little tempted to add that extra splash of sweetness into our scones, but make sure you don't use too much sugar as it will flatten them! We recommend using a maximum of 100g of sugar per 250g of flour.

Why don t my scones rise high? ›

The longer you get the dough sit before baking it, the less your scones will rise. Try to bake the dough as soon as you finishing kneading and rolling it out. Letting the mixture sit too long will cause the gas bubbles from the leavening agent to disappear. These gas bubbles are what help the scones rise.

Which flour is best for scones? ›

Use all-purpose flour for a higher rising scone that holds its shape nicely, both in and out of the oven. To make more delicate, lower-rising, cake-like scones, substitute cake flour for all-purpose flour. Reduce the liquid in the recipe by 1 to 2 tablespoons, using just enough to bring the dough together.

Is buttermilk or cream better for scones? ›

Dairy: Buttermilk is a signature ingredient of biscuits while cream or milk is a more typical moistening ingredient in scones. Mix ins: A scone's finer crumbs invites more mix ins whereas biscuits are usually plain.
